Growing up as a second generation Brooklyn based Italian American, my grandparents and parents always tried to keep their culture close to my upbringing. Though my parents and grandparents spoke Neapolitan often at home, the language was largely kept from me and I never learned to speak it, only to understand parts of it. When I went to college and took my first Italian class, I was shocked. What had I heard growing up? When I went home for Christmas, I couldn't understand why the language my family spoke was so different compared to the language of my Italian class. My Italian teacher who was Neapolitan, was the one who started my journey looking into the culture and language of Naples.
This website is not a definitive or all encompassing profile of the Neapolitan language, but rather should be seen as an attempt to reconnect and better understand the beautiful language of Naples and its culture by a second generation Italian American.
This project would not have been possible without the incredible amount of research made available by those who are tirelessly working to honor and preserve the Neapolitan language by linguists, teachers, and Neapolitans in general. A special thanks to my family in Naples and New York City who have helped answer my many questions about this project and an extra special thanks to my grandmother and her sisters, who have taught and been teaching about Naples since before I can remember.
